Professor of Pediatric Surgery
The Department of Pediatric Surgery is a tertiary institution based in Hannover Medical School, Germany. It represents the only university pediatric surgical department of the province of Lower Saxony (8 million inhabitants).
The pediatric surgical team consists of a director / chairman, 6 consultant pediatric surgeons and residents. A research laboratory including biologists and medical-technical assistants, is an integral part of the department.
Main clinical priorities are neonatal surgery, urology, thoracic surgery and surgical oncology. The department is particularly focused on hepatobiliary diseases including biliary atresia. Another specific focus is minimally invasive surgery. The Department is a member of the European Reference Networks Rare Diseases (ERNs), an initiative of the European Union. Specific activities are focused on ERNICA (congenital rare gastrointestinal diseases) and RareLiver (rare hepatobiliary diseases) which create a governance structure for knowledge sharing and care coordination across the EU.
The research laboratory handles cell cultures, animal models (rat, mouse, knock-out mouse), PCR, western blot, FACS-analysis and numerous other immunological investigations.
Basic research projects including murine models focus on 3 subjects:
- biliary atresia
- neonatal immunology
- effects of metal implants
There are numerous ongoing clinical studies, also in collaboration with numerous national and international institutions.
