Module Surgery 4th year of study
In the fourth year of study, the module Surgery, Urology, Orthopedics is completed within a quintile. The introductory meeting of the module takes place on the first Tuesday of the quintile. Here, all surgical clinics introduce themselves. The module extends over six weeks.
Theory is taught in the lectures available in Ilias. In Visceral Surgery, theory is reinforced and applied in the "Acute Abdomen" seminar. The second seminar in Visceral Surgery is the Sutures and Knots course. Here, practical principles of surgical suturing and knotting techniques are taught.
The bedside teaching ("UaK", Practical Surgery) is held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 14:45 to 16:45 and on Fridays from 12:30 to 14:30. This course is designed to apply the history and examination skills learned in the Diagnostic Methods module to visceral surgery patients under the supervision of a physician. The bedside teaching meeting will be held in front of Seminar Room on Ward 85 (in the middle of the ward). For more information, see our flyer in Ilias.
The surgery exam is given every other quintile. The oral practical exam is given at the end of each quintile. This involves partial exams in urology, orthopedics, and one surgical subject (VCH, HTTG, UCH, PHW). Thus, a portion of the students will be examined in Visceral Surgery. The visceral surgery exam will include a history and examination of an acting patient with a visceral surgical condition. For organizational questions, please contact Martina Hanke.
The curriculum for the 2021/2022 academic year will be posted on the Dean's Office page.

Block practical surgery 5th year of study
In the fifth year of study, the two-week block practical in surgery is completed. Some of the students will be assigned to the Department of General, Visceral and Transplant Surgery. In our clinic, they will be permanently assigned to one of our teams (upper gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, lower gastrointestinal tract, endocrine surgery, transplant surgery). Thus, there are fixed contact persons for the entire duration of the block practical with us. As a member of the team, the students will experience the daily routine of a visceral surgeon, participate in ward rounds, assist in operations, examine patients in the consultation hours together with experienced colleagues and take part in the emergency admission service.
The curriculum of the Block practical in Surgery for the academic year 2021/2022 can be viewed here.
Famulatures can easily be completed in our clinic during the semester break. During a pre-arranged period, the interns are assigned to one of our teams (upper gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, lower gastrointestinal tract, endocrine surgery, transplantation surgery). Individual requests will be considered in team assignments. Participation in surgeries of other teams is nevertheless possible without complications.
You are welcome to complete your surgical PJ tertial with us. The PJ is completed at the Center for Surgery in two different surgical clinics in blocks of two months each. The assignment can take place in the clinics of general, visceral and transplant surgery, trauma surgery as well as cardiac, thoracic, transplant and vascular surgery. As part of these blocks, there is a one-week assignment in the emergency room and a one-week assignment in a surgical intensive care unit. Accompanying this, the PJ seminar takes place weekly. Students who complete a block in visceral surgery are permanently assigned to one of our teams (upper gastrointestinal tract, hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, lower gastrointestinal tract, endocrine surgery, transplant surgery). Participation in ORs from other teams is possible by arrangement. As a rule, you will complete your one-week intensive care assignment in our surgical intensive care unit 81 during your PJ with us.
In this regard, please observe the requirements of the dean's office: https://www.mhh.de/praktisches-jahr.
Clinical (oncological and transplantation surgery research; teaching research) and experimental surgical projects are continuously being worked on. Among the experimental surgical projects, the transplantation laboratory and the ReMediES working group are particularly noteworthy.
Please direct inquiries about this to the teaching assistants.
Through the elective "Introduction to Laparoscopy", the basic knowledge and skills required for laparoscopic procedures are taught. In practical exercises, students learn the correct handling of laparoscopic instruments as well as the appropriate suturing and knotting techniques. The skills acquired will be applied to a cholecystectomy on porcine organs at the conclusion of the course. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to name indications, access routes, and techniques of the most common laparoscopic surgeries and assist in simple laparoscopic procedures. The course takes place over one weekend (Friday to Sunday). A short lecture on a visceral surgical clinical picture assigned during a preparation appointment serves as an examination performance.
