He studied human medicine at the Eberhard-Karls-University in Tübingen.
 
He completed further training as a specialist at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. Since July 2012 Dr. Dopfer has been working in the Clinic for Pediatric Pneumology, Allergology and Neonatology at the Hannover Medical School.

Since August 2015, he has held the additional titles of pediatric pneumology and allergology in the field of pediatric and adolescent medicine. His clinical focus is on pediatric pneumology, allergology and mucovicidosis.

Since February 2020, he has been the head of the pediatric emergency department.
