Marcel Mertz studied philosophy and sociology at the University of Basel and received his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Mannheim in 2015. In addition to his position at the MHH since 2011, he worked at the (then) Department of Medical and Health Ethics of the University Hospital Basel, at the Philosophical Seminar of the University of Mannheim and at the Research Unit Ethics of the University Hospital Cologne and at the Cologne Center for Ethics, Rights, Economics and Social Sciences of Health (ceres) of the University of Cologne.

His main research interests are the methodology and the inter-/transdisciplinarity of medical and research ethics, in particular empirical and “evidence-based” ethics, systematic reviews of normative literature and ethical assessment methods in Health Technology Assessment (HTA). In terms of content, his research has focused on clinical ethics, including procedures for clinical ethics consultation and the development of clinical ethics guidelines. He has also worked on the ethical challenges of dementia, as well as technical ethical issues such as digital self-determination and robot ethics. In addition to teaching in the fields of History, Theory and Ethics of Medicine (GTE) and Research Ethics, he has taught practical and theoretical philosophy.

Mertz currently coordinates the working group “Ethics and Empirics” (Ethik und Empirie) of the Academy of Ethics in Medicine (AEM) and is one of the spokespersons of CELLS MHH.
