Teaching
The Institute of Ethics, History and Philosophy of Medicine is currently involved in six degree programs at the MHH. In addition, staff members of the Institute are engaged in the advanced training of various healthcare professions (e.g. advanced specialist training in nursing). For more information on the courses, dates and examinations, please refer to ILIAS. Dr. med. Gerald Neitzke is the teaching coordinator.
The Institute offers the module “History, Theory, and Ethics of Medicine” which addresses fundamental challenges of medical practice from a historical and philosophical perspective. In particular, the course treats ethical conflicts and dilemmas, ethical questions at the beginning and end of life, questions of justice in the healthcare system and the ethics of medical research, also with regard to the role of medicine under National Socialism. The examinations consists in an assessment portfolio with various subtasks relating to the topics of the course.
In the first year of study, the teaching week on cancer is organized together with colleagues from the Women's Clinic.
Institute staff also participate in teaching the modules “Anatomical principles of medicine” (course in anatomical terminology), “Diagnostic methods” (course in clinical terminology), “Medicine of ageing and the elderly (geriatrics)” and “Palliative medicine”.
The Institute regularly offers electives courses on medicine and war in the “long 20th century”, medicine in film, and the content and methods of clinical ethics.
As part of the Dentistry degree program, the Institute teaches dental terminology and ethics and history of dentistry.
As part of the M.A. in Public Health, the Institute teaches the history of medicine (including the development of the public health system) and core topics in ethics (public health ethics and general medical ethics).
As part of the “Biorisk Management and Bioethics” module of IDOH, the Institute gives lectures on research ethics, biosafety, the concept of One Health, and the ethics of translational research.
The Institute participates in the module “Data Protection, Data Security and Ethics” of the M.A. Biomedical Data Science. The module covers basic knowledge of data protection, data security, and data and information ethics, all of which must be taken into account in the planning and successful implementation of data science projects.
As part of the Bachelor of Midwifery programme, the Institute offers lectures on professional ethics and the historical development of the midwifery profession.
