From May 27 to June 2, 2024, the MHH transplant representatives will be traveling through the north to educate people about organ donation. On Saturday, June 1, 2024, Organ Donation Day, the info campers will stop at the MHH.
To mark Organ Donation Day on Saturday, June 1, 2024, the organ donation advisors (transplant officers) at Hannover Medical School (MHH) are taking part in the "Camping for Organ Donation" campaign organized by the Network of Transplant Officers (TxB) Region NORD e.V. From May 27 to June 2, 2024, the network's transplant officers will be travelling throughout Lower Saxony with a total of four information campervans - one of them from MHH - to talk to the public. The info mobiles will stop at various meeting places, including weekly markets, shopping centers, schools, but also campsites, pubs, open-air festivals and sporting events. "In Germany, there is still far too little talk about attitudes towards organ donation," says Dr. Frank Logemann, one of five MHH organ donation advisors. "With our campaign, we want to inform the public about the topic in an open-minded and neutral way."
Campers provide information on June 1 on the MHH grounds
The MHH organ donation advisors inform patients, visitors and staff about organ and tissue donation on Organ Donation Day on the MHH campus. Three campervans will be
- on Saturday, June 1, 2024,
- from 1 to 4 pm
- in front of the MHH main entrance, the MHH Children's Hospital and at the "Place of Silence" in the patient garden,
- Carl-Neuberg-Straße 2, 30625 Hanover.
The team will be supported by members of the Transplant Center's Patient Advisory Board, who will share their experiences of living with a transplanted organ, and the "Streetbunnys", who will escort the campervans around the MHH grounds to the Children's Hospital. On their tour, the organ donation advisors will also be collecting donations for the MHH Children's Hospital. The donations will be handed over at the children's hospital on Saturday.
Documenting the decision relieves relatives
According to a representative survey conducted by the Federal Center for Health Education, 84 percent of people in Germany have a positive attitude towards organ donation; however, only 44 percent have documented their decision for or against organ and tissue donation. The reason: a lack of knowledge and trust in organ and tissue donation among the population. However, every documented decision relieves the burden on relatives in the event of a case because the decision can be clearly determined. "Many official bodies have been trying for years to improve the situation through legal regulations and information campaigns. The evaluations show that the population has not yet been reached sufficiently in this way," says Dr. Logemann. "That's why we go to the places where we meet the population."
Citizens can record their decision for or against organ and tissue donation in an organ donor card, a living will and, since March 2024, online in the organ donation register.
