Successful start to the Hannover Children's University: MHH neurologist gives exciting lecture for eight- to twelve-year-olds about the brain.
How does my brain produce all my ideas and thoughts? Prof. Dr. Thomas Skripuletz, a neurologist at Hannover Medical School (MHH), answered this question and many more during the first lecture of the KinderUniHannover (KUH) this winter semester. He took about 300 inquisitive girls and boys on a journey into the interior of our super brain, thus ensuring a successful start to the annual lecture series for eight- to twelve-year-olds from Hannover and the surrounding area.
It was as quiet as a mouse in lecture theatre F when Professor Skripuletz began his children's lecture: What is the function of the cerebrum? What does the limbic system do? What do racing cars have in common with nerve cells in the brain? The specialist in the nervous system imparted a great deal of knowledge about the human brain in three quarters of an hour, without a single dull moment. His children Emilia (14) and Oliver (8) helped him.
The young students were thrilled to learn that the brain uses only sugar as an energy source to meet its high energy needs. The parents, who were able to watch a broadcast of the lecture in the lecture hall next door, may have liked the answer to the question of why sleep is so important for the brain better. In any case, everyone went home smarter and now has a better understanding of their own brain.
This winter semester, the five universities in Hannover are inviting children to a joint lecture series for the 21st time. The vividly designed, child-friendly events provide exciting insights into the world of science and encourage curiosity. The patron is Falko Mohrs, Lower Saxony's Minister of Science. The MHHplus foundation is providing financial support for the events.
The KUH lectures will continue until February. Next event: On Tuesday, 19 November 2024, from 5:15 p.m., everything at Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH) will revolve around Hannover's first influencer, the polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.
