Because a complete evacuation of the university hospital is not possible, a comprehensive protection concept has been developed.
The new clinic building of the Hannover Medical School (MHH) is part of what is currently the largest construction project in Lower Saxony. During the preparation of the construction site at Stadtfelddamm, the entire area is carefully examined for explosive ordnance from the Second World War.
For further exploration of suspected sites and any necessary defusing measures, the Hanover fire brigade, in coordination with the Lower Saxony explosive ordnance disposal service, will set up a security area on 30 November 2024 and evacuate about 9000 people in the surrounding neighbourhoods.
Best possible preparation
A complete evacuation of the MHH is not possible because there are patients who depend on medical care at the MHH. Therefore, a comprehensive protection concept has been developed that includes structural protective devices and organisational measures.
For almost two years now, many MHH departments have been working closely with the explosive ordnance disposal service and the Hanover fire department to implement the protection concept. Integrated into this are human resources management and the staff council, emergency and disaster medicine, nursing management, occupational and patient safety, as well as the presidium and many other employees, and we are also drawing on the experience gained from the COVID pandemic.
The 24/7 operation of the university hospital will be scaled down to an absolute minimum for the planned ordnance clearance. Patients, staff and students who have to be on the MHH campus during the security period will be protected as well as possible even in the event of a defusing or detonation.
Hotline for inquiries
From 18 November 2024, a hotline will be set up for telephone enquiries from members of the public and patients, similar to the one set up during the coronavirus pandemic.
